Drug candidates that act on the immune system are hard to rank in rodents. Immune cell subsets, cytokine responses and antibody repertoires differ enough between mice and humans that a clean rodent result often says little about what a monkey will do. Non-human primate (NHP, Cynomolgus macaques) models narrow that gap in a species close enough to humans that the same assays and the same clinical endpoints can be read across.
Prisys Biotechnologies runs these studies from model induction to final report: dosing, in-life monitoring, bio-sampling, and the immunology assays that turn samples into interpretable data. The work sits inside the Immunology & Inflammation therapeutic area and covers small molecules, biologics, antibodies and gene therapies.

Immunology And Inflammation Model Experience
Experience in this field shows up in details that a model list does not capture: how variable induction is between animals, how long a lesion takes to stabilize, and which readout moves first when a treatment is working. The I&I portfolio is built around those details, with capabilities that cover a range of induced and challenge-based models rather than a single disease.
Model choice follows the question. Mechanism confirmation, dose selection and immunotoxicity screening need different endpoints, and often different induction schedules.
Comprehensive I&I Models
Our portfolio includes models for numerous I&I diseases such as:
- NHP Disease Models: Non-human primates (NHPs) are widely used in immunology research because their genetic and immunological makeup is close to that of humans.
- Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): The RA model uses cynomolgus monkeys and includes an improved induction protocol for high incidence rates, with CRP as a predictive tool for RA onset.
- Psoriasis and Atopic Diseases: Models for psoriasis and comprehensive atopic diseases like asthma and allergic rhinitis are developed using OVA (ovalbumin) challenges and characterized by skin and lung function assessments. Atopic dermatitis is read on the same skin assessments.
- Delayed-type Hypersensitivity (DTH): This model uses Tetanus toxin to induce an acute DTH reaction, with relapse responses upon repeated challenges. It is useful for testing efficacy, immunogenicity, and immunotoxicity.
- T cell-dependent Antibody Response (TDAR): The TDAR assay, involving Keyhole Limpet Hemocyanin, is a standard for assessing the impact of a drug on immune competence, including antigen uptake, T cell help, B cell activation, and antibody production.
Beyond that list, the platform covers Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Multiple Sclerosis/EAE. Both are relapsing conditions, so a study has to allow repeated dosing and repeated sampling across weeks rather than a single terminal endpoint. Immunosuppression draws on the same assay set.
Each model reproduces part of the human pathophysiology. The parts that do not carry over decide how the efficacy data can be read, and they are worth naming before a study starts.
Versatile Support for Various Drug Modalities
Prisys Biotechnologies has evaluated drug modalities ranging from small molecules to biologics, and from antibodies to gene therapies. Modality changes the assay more than the principle: a bispecific antibody, an AAV vector and a small-molecule inhibitor all have to reach the target tissue, engage the intended pathway, and leave immune competence intact. What differs is the readout that proves it.
Clinical Transformation with Advanced Techniques
Translation depends on timing as much as on the model. Immune responses in a monkey move on a different clock from the clinical course in a patient, and one terminal sample rarely shows which way a response is heading. Flexible in vivo imaging and bio-sampling plans follow acute and chronic changes in the same animal, and Clinical Imaging puts the anatomical read on the same timeline as the blood work.
Immunology Assays
Our immunology assays for NHP studies cover the readouts that sponsors and reviewers ask for first:
- Blood Immunoglobulins (IGs): The Auto Hematology Analyzer and Biochemistry Analyzer detect blood biochemical indices, which may include immunoglobulins.
- Immunocyte Panels: Flow Cytometry with a range of indicators such as CD3, CD4, CD8 and others supports immunotyping of B cells, T cells, monocytes, myeloid cells and NK cells.
- Cytokine Profiles: The Advancing Bioanalysis platform includes LC-MS, Chemiluminescence and the ELISA analysis system, which are typically used to analyze cytokine profiles.
These assays show whether a change in disease score came with a change in immune competence, which is the question a safety reviewer will ask. When a program moves into IND-enabling work, the same readouts feed the Toxicology package, so the data set runs continuously from efficacy to safety.
