Consequently, China began large-scale development of its experimental monkey breeding industry. The 1980s saw the establishment of multiple breeding bases, initially relying on wild monkeys and later transitioning to artificial breeding and standardized management.

In 2004, China issued a notice on strengthening the management of experimental monkeys, strictly regulating breeding, sales, and introduction processes. This management framework helped transition China's experimental monkey industry from disorder to standardization, making it one of the largest exporters globally, providing monkeys to countries such as the United States, EU, and Japan. By 2016, exports from China accounted for over 65% of U.S. imports.

 

 

2. Current Status and Supply-Demand Imbalances

Recently, the surge in global biopharmaceutical activities, particularly in fields like monoclonal antibodies and cytokines, dramatically increased the demand for experimental monkeys. As crucial models for preclinical safety evaluations, the demand for crab-eating macaques soared, leading to price hikes from less than 100,000 RMB in 2017 to over 200,000 RMB in 2021. Despite these price rises, production volumes did not increase, exposing structural issues within China's industry. The breeding population is aging rapidly, with many enterprises adopting a strategy of selling available monkeys without renewing breeding stocks. By 2023, over 80% of breeding female macaques were aged over 8 years, signaling significant future supply pressures.

  • Aging Breeding Population: The aging breeding stock is a primary challenge. With monkeys maturing sexually after about four years and becoming experiment-ready at six to seven years, long production cycles and high maintenance costs disincentivize population renewal. Many enterprises sell all viable monkeys, neglecting to retain younger individuals for future breeding, subsequently diminishing overall breeding capabilities.
  • Quality Control and Declining Genetic Diversity: Microbiological quality and genetic backgrounds of experimental monkeys are critical for reliable preclinical studies. However, increased prices have led to illegal smuggling and wild capture, introducing unchecked monkeys that may carry infectious diseases and genetic contamination, significantly impacting experimental stability and accuracy. Despite some establishments maintaining SPF-grade (specific pathogen-free) breeding populations, market-wide quality control remains insufficient.
  • Risks of Import Expansion: To resolve supply-demand conflicts, some suggest easing imports from Southeast Asia. However, these sources have been affected by illegal hunting and habitat loss, leading to reduced population quality and numbers. Introducing wild monkeys without stringent breeding controls could trigger microbiological infections and genetic mixing, threatening China's overall quality standards.

 

 

4. Future Development Opportunities for the Industry

  • Demand-Driven by Biopharmaceutical Industry: With the rapid development of fields like monoclonal antibodies, gene therapy, and cell therapy, the demand for non-human primate experimental animals will continue to rise. In neuroscience, cancer research, and infectious diseases, these animals are essential models. In the coming years, China's experimental monkey industry is poised to expand its market share in the global supply chain.
  • Technological Innovation and Model Construction: China leads in non-human primate genetic editing and somatic cell cloning technologies. These can be leveraged to construct more disease-specific models, such as for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's , and cardiovascular diseases . Developing high-quality disease models anticipates greater opportunities for China in biopharmaceutical R&D.
  • Strategic Resource Reserves and International Cooperation: Recognizing non-human primates as a strategic resource is increasingly critical globally. The U.S. has established a national primate resource center to store such animals. China might consider similar reserve plans to ensure the stable continuation of biopharmaceutical research. Furthermore, fostering cooperation with international CROs and research institutions will enhance China's global competitive edge in the experimental monkey industry.
