Prisys Biotech: Animal Models For Women's Health Therapeutics

From adolescence to menopause, the female physiology presents a unique spectrum of health challenges. Endometriosis, a chronic condition affecting approximately 10% of women and girls of reproductive age, is characterized by persistent pain, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Pregnancy complications remain a cause of maternal mortality worldwide, and post-menopause, women experience a markedly accelerated rate of bone density loss and a substantial increase in cardiovascular disease risk compared to men.

Addressing these critical women's health issues, Prisys Biotech is dedicated to accelerating research progress through the development of highly precise animal models. We have successfully established standardized Macaca fascicularis (Cynomolgus macaques) models encompassing key disease areas such as endometriosis and postpartum hemorrhage, providing essential experimental systems for innovative drug development.

Endometriosis: Modeling a Chronic Estrogen-Dependent Disease

Endometriosis is a frequently underdiagnosed chronic disease affecting an estimated 190 million women and girls of reproductive age globally. Its pathophysiology is defined by the ectopic growth of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterine cavity, commonly manifesting as severe dysmenorrhea, chronic pelvic pain, and potential infertility. As a complex estrogen-dependent condition, endometriosis can persist from menarche to menopause.

Macaca fascicularis Endometriosis Model

Model Establishment:

The endometriosis model is designed to replicate the key pathological features of endometriosis, where endometrial-like tissue grows outside the uterus. Our Macaca fascicularis model utilizes surgical transplantation of autologous endometrial tissue to establish a homologous and immune-compatible system. Specific transplantation sites and surgical approaches are employed to mimic different types of endometriotic lesions.

Model Characteristics:

Successful model establishment results in the formation of characteristic endometriotic lesions at the transplantation sites. These lesions closely resemble human endometrial tissue histologically and exhibit cyclical bleeding, mirroring the pathophysiology of human endometriosis. Model animals may display endometriosis-related symptoms. The presence and characteristics of endometriotic lesions can be assessed through visualization and histopathological evaluation.

Pharmacodynamic Study Applications:

The Macaca fascicularis endometriosis model is a valuable preclinical tool for evaluating the efficacy of novel endometriosis therapeutics. It is suitable for assessing various therapeutic approaches targeting endometriosis. Key pharmacodynamic endpoints include changes in lesion characteristics and relevant clinical parameters.

Postpartum Hemorrhage: A Life-Threatening Obstetric Emergency and Animal Model Research

During pregnancy, maternal circulating blood volume and extravascular fluid volume significantly increase, accompanied by a hypercoagulable state and elevated levels of placental corticosteroids. These physiological adaptations enhance maternal tolerance to blood loss, potentially masking early signs of shock. However, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) remains one of the most common and critical obstetric emergencies. Particularly in out-of-hospital deliveries, early uncontrolled bleeding may go undetected and unmanaged. By the time clinical symptoms become apparent, patients often have progressed to moderate to severe shock, missing the optimal window for resuscitation. Establishing animal models of hemorrhagic shock in pregnancy is of significant practical importance for in-depth investigation of the mechanisms underlying maternal shock, optimization of maternal resuscitation strategies, and improvement of resuscitation success rates. Prisys Biotech has successfully developed a Macaca fascicularis postpartum hemorrhage model, laying a robust foundation for related research.

Macaca fascicularis Postpartum Hemorrhage Model

Model Establishment:

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is defined as vaginal bleeding exceeding a certain threshold (typically >500ml) within 24 hours after fetal delivery. The Macaca fascicularis PPH model is designed to simulate the pathophysiology of human postpartum hemorrhage, particularly bleeding caused by uterine atony or placental factors. We have established robust models to effectively mimic these key pathological mechanisms.

Model Characteristics:

The primary characteristic of the Macaca fascicularis PPH model is a significant increase in postpartum vaginal bleeding. In severe cases, this can rapidly progress to hypovolemic shock. The model can be assessed through monitoring key physiological indicators.

Pharmacodynamic Study Applications:

This non-human primate PPH model serves as an ideal preclinical model for evaluating the efficacy of hemostatic agents and uterotonic drugs in treating PPH. It can be utilized to assess the efficacy of various therapeutic agents. Key pharmacodynamic endpoints include blood loss and related physiological parameters.
