Prisys Biotech has launched its NHP R&D Center in Shanghai, a facility spanning over 4000 square meters and built around large animal studies. Laboratory space, imaging suites, and animal housing sit in one building, which keeps a study on a single site from first dose to necropsy.
The center includes a Biosafety Laboratory II (BSL-2), a Clinical Translational Medicine Center equipped with MRI, CT, DSA, ICU, and detection capabilities, and specialized laboratories for respiratory disease, brain science and behavior, and ophthalmology. BSL-2 is the containment level that vaccine and gene therapy programs need when they work with viral vectors. The Clinical Imaging suite holds MRI, CT, and DSA, and an ICU carries animals through recovery after a procedure. Catheter work runs through the DSA-Guided Interventional Platform, which keeps angiography and delivery in one room, so vessel anatomy and catheter position are visible during the procedure rather than after it.
The center's main work will be Pharmacokinetics (PK), Pharmacodynamics (PD), and Toxicology evaluations for gene therapy, biomacromolecules, vaccines, and medical devices. It will also support target discovery, mechanism verification, and diagnostic labeling.
For a sponsor, co-location changes the shape of a program. A candidate is dosed, imaged, sampled for exposure, and carried into a repeat-dose arm without a transfer between vendors, and the animals, imaging protocol, and assay methods stay the same across that sequence. Large animal work loses time at exactly those handoffs, because a new site means new baseline data and a new acclimation period before the first dose.
Laboratory animals at the center include monkeys and other large animals. Housing and handling fall under the company's animal welfare program, and the building includes animal welfare facilities alongside the laboratory space.
