Background: There are many forms of anemia, each with its own cause. Anemia can be temporary or long term, and it can range from mild to severe. With past validation and data accumulation, we could precisely maintain an anemia state (mild to severe) by depleting certain amount of RBCs from NHP. This model could be used to assess certain types of anemia such as iron/vitamin deficiency or SCD manifestation/pathology. It is clinically proved increasing the levels of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) are clinically beneficial with longer survival and lower pain rates in anemia especially SCD patients, which is also a crucial endpoint in this model.

Model: Phlebotomy induced anemia.

Standard study duration: 8-10 weeks

Clinical endpoint: HCT, HGB, coagulation tests, HbF expression…

Features: Human-like anemia symptoms and markers, safety assessment, periodic treatment, secondary diseases…
